PROTECTING THE ENVIROMENT

Creel Caught

This innovative and environmentally-conscious approach to shellfish harvesting represents the forefront of sustainable fishing practices. As a passive technique, it significantly mitigates the detrimental impact on seabeds commonly associated with traditional methods like dredging and trawling. Notably, this method is highly favoured by Michelin-starred and elite chefs across the UK and Europe.

How We Fish

Our vessels are dedicated exclusively to shellfish fishing using creels (pots) equipped with "escape panels." These panels allow juvenile and undersized shellfish to escape, promoting their growth and safeguarding future populations. This method reflects our commitment to ecological balance and marine conservation.

Moreover, we enforce some of the largest minimum landing sizes in the UK. By ensuring only mature shellfish are harvested, we contribute to the sustainability of fisheries. This rigorous standard supports healthy marine stocks and secures the future of our industry, exemplifying our leadership in responsible fishing practices.

High Standards in Sustainable Shellfish Fishing

SPECIES CAUGHT

What We Fish

Our fleet operates under a well-planned system of three seasonal fisheries, each uniquely designed to optimise sustainability and preserve marine life. By aligning our activities with the natural cycles of the species we target, we minimise ecological disruption while ensuring the health and resilience of our fisheries.

From December to July, we concentrate on Creel-caught Langoustines, selecting this period to align with their natural life cycle, allowing for population recovery during off-seasons. Our focus then shifts to Creel-caught Scallops from November through May, timing our activities to adhere to ecological guidelines that support population maintenance and conservation.

Throughout the year, we manage the harvesting of Creel-caught Crabs with stringent protocols to prevent overfishing. This continuous management is based on comprehensive ecological research, ensuring crab populations remain stable and productive.

In sum, this thoughtful approach guarantees our operations remain both environmentally responsible and economically viable, exemplifying our commitment to sustainable fishing practices.

Effective Seasonal Strategies for Sustainable Shellfish Harvesting

Quality & Sustainability

The Isle of Man fisheries are recognized for their commitment to quality and sustainability, particularly in the realm of shellfish harvesting. A standout method employed here is the Creel Caught technique, which is a passive fishing method renowned for its minimal environmental impact. Unlike conventional methods such as dredging and trawling, which can significantly harm seabeds, Creel Caught fishing preserves the ocean floor ecology, ensuring a healthier marine environmental footprint.

Moreover, the Isle of Man fisheries adhere to stringent regulations concerning the size and quantity of shellfish harvested. All catches undergo thorough inspections, ensuring that juvenile and undersized shellfish are promptly released back into their natural habitat, thus safeguarding the future generations of the stock. The Manx Fish Producers Organisation plays a crucial role in this sustainable practice by meticulously monitoring catch volumes and implementing guidelines on who can fish within Manx waters. This regulatory framework not only preserves the shellfish populations but also ensures that the industry remains viable for future generations, reflecting a balanced approach to marine resource management.
